זהו סיפורם המרגש של קבוצה של ילדים יהודים שעוברים את השואה. בראשית הסיפור מתגוררים הילדים באותה שכונה בקובנה שבליטא, ברחוב מאפו, אולם עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה הם מגורשים עם משפחותיהם ודרכיהם נפרדות. הסופרת מתמקדת בכל אחד מהילדים – המגיעים אל הגטו ואל קרונות המוות, ונמלטים למקומות מסתור שונים, למנזר, אל היערות – ומספרת על דרכו בצורה מוחשית ומרגשת.

המחברת, שרה נשמית, היתה ממייסדי קיבוץ לוחמי הגטאות וממנהלי 'בית לוחמי הגטאות'.

The Children From Mapuh Street by Sarah Nshamit is a well written, touching story of Jewish children living in the same apartment building in the time of the holocaust. Childhood friends from Kovna (Kaunas in Lithowenia, with its 40,000 Jewish residents before 1940) who are thrown into the turbulence of the Nazi persecution of the Jews during WW2, and their journeys during the war.

Well worth reading, it's a good example of prime Israeli literature that has been abridged well into easy Hebrew by Gesher Library.

Sarah Nshamit was a holocaust survivor who ame to Israel in1948, and was among the founders of Kibbutz Lohamei haGheta'ot in the Western Galilee. She served for many years on the Board of Directors of Ghetto Fighters' House Museum.
