About the Tzadik:
✡️ Date of birth: March 3, 1929, (Hebrew:כ"א באדר תרפ"ט) in Jerusalem
Mordechai Tzemach Eliyahu (Hebrew: מרדכי צמח אליהו) was an Israeli rabbi, posek, and spiritual leader.
The son of a Jerusalem Kabbalist, in his youth Eliyahu, was active in Brit HaKanaim, a radical religious underground organization.
He served as a Dayan in Beersheba and in the Supreme Rabbinical Court in Jerusalem.
He also served as Israel's Chief Sephardic Rabbi from 1983 until 1993 and led the national-religious public in matters of Jewish Law and philosophy for many years, even after the end of their official terms in office.
Rabbi Eliyahu and his wife Rabbanit Tzvia Eliyahu have four children, one of whom, Shmuel Eliyahu, is the Chief Rabbi of Safed. Rabbi Eliyahu suffered from a heart condition.
On August 24, 2009, he collapsed in his home and was rushed to the hospital and died almost a year later.
