Edited by Saul Touster
In the winter of 1945-1946, Holocaust survivors in displaced persons camps around Munich created an extraordinary
illustrated Haggadah in preparation for the first Passover after liberation.
For five decades the original was all but forgotten.
This is a Haggadah written for and truly dedicated to the She'erith Hapletah, the Saved Remnant, 'the few who escaped.'
This book reproduces the pages produced by the survivors, in Hebrew on the left,
with an English commentary on the significance of the art as well as additional poetry and prose illuminations on the right side.
Interwoven with the traditional Passover liturgy are two stories: that of the deliverance from Pharaoh in Egypt and
the Holocaust story of those Jews who survived Hitler.
Bold hand done woodcuts vividly associate the Exodus from Egypt with the liberation from Nazi horror.
The heart of the work was created by one dedicated man, Lithuanian teacher and writer Yosef Dov Sheinson.
He not only wrote the Haggadah but also designed and decorated the pages and selected the powerful woodcuts crafted by another survivor,
artist Mikls Adler. In his fascinating introduction, editor Saul Touster, Professor Emeritus of American Studies at Brandeis University,
provides not only the history behind this Haggadah but also an incisive commentary that reveals the startling emotional depth
the words and illustrations possess.
